Washington State Social Work Licensure Examination Preparation Course

NASW Washington State Chapter is pleased to offer this popular course to social workers seeking to become licensed. The Licensure Examination Preparation Course will assist social workers in their preparations to take either the clinical or advanced ASWB exam that is required for social work licensure in the State of Washington and most other states.

The Course was extensively revised and updated in 2012 to reflect the changes made by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), the administrator of social work licensure examinations in the U.S. and many parts of Canada, in the clinical level and advanced generalist examinations. According to ASWB, the most notable differences between the examinations have to do with the way test content is organized. Prior to these new editions, each examination used 150 test questions to measure competency across 10-11 different content areas. Beginning in 2011 for the Clinical examination, and in 2012 for the Advanced Generalist examination, the tests now use 150 questions to measure competency across 4 or 5 broad content areas. The Licensure Examination Preparation Course has reorganized and revised its content to reflect these 4-5 broad content areas and has added new content where needed.

The Course retains its well received approach of emphasizing three elements as significantly contributing to a passing score on the examination. These are anxiety management, focused content review and avoiding mistakes in answering questions. The course includes a 200+ page manual and a sample test, helpful in practicing the techniques of avoiding mistakes in answering questions.

The course also includes a review of the major content areas of the examination including:

Human Development, Diversity and Behavior in the Environment
Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
Psychotherapy, Clinical Interventions and Case Management
The Social Work Relationship
Professional Ethics and Values

Washington State has a first time pass rate in excess of 80% compared with the national pass rate of just below 75%. NASW-Washington State Chapter believes that this course has a lot to do with more Washington social workers passing!
