Approximately 100,000 adolescents and young adults in the United States experience First Episode Psychosis (FEP) each year, with peak onset occurring between 15-25 years of age. Psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia can derail a young person’s social, academic, and vocational development, yet despite these complexities, early intervention with evidence-based therapies offers real hope for clinical and functional recovery.

Join Merrill Berger, Ph.D,  Director of Harborview's First Episode Psychosis Program, for a 1.5 hour presentation about first episodes of psychosis. Learn about the importance of early intervention and the resources and treatment options for young people experiencing a first episode of psychosis.

Objectives

1. Will be familiar with the components of coordinated care for early psychosis and their importance in promoting positive outcomes.

2. Be familiar with the referral process and location of coordinated specialty care for early psychosis clinics in Washington state.

About the Presenter

 Merrill Berger is a licensed psychologist who has practiced in both the United States and England. She is a graduate of Boston University and completed her Ph.D at the University of Southern California. In England she was principal child psychologist at St Thomas' Hospital, London. She completed her post doctoral training at The Children's Hospital, Boston/Harvard Medical School.  She is also trained as a forensic psychologist.  She has had a number of clinical/administrative positions including being the clinical director at a small psychiatric hospital in Massachusetts. She is now Director of the STEP-UP program at Harborview Medical Center, Behavioral Health Institute.
